And once you know the base recipe, you can top it with anything your heart desires maple brown sugar, banana nut, strawberry and cream, even chocolate peanut butter.

I started making oatmeal when I wanted a breakfast that would keep me full but didn’t require a lot of thought. It’s become my go-to for busy mornings, cold mornings, and mornings when I just want something warm and easy. And the best part? The toppings make it feel like a treat, not a chore.

Let’s Make It

Microwave Instructions:

  1. Place the oats, water, and salt in a microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Heat on high for 90 seconds. If needed, add 15-second increments until the oatmeal is puffed and softened.
  3. Add milk and stir before serving.

Stovetop Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat to low and pour in the oats.
  3. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the oats are soft and have absorbed most of the liquid, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the milk, remove from heat, cover, and let stand for 2–3 minutes.

Assembly:

  • Stir in your chosen toppings. Let rest for a few minutes to cool. Thin with a little more milk if desired. Serve warm.

A Few Things I’ve Learned

  • Salt matters. A pinch of salt brings out the natural sweetness of the oats. Don’t skip it.
  • Don’t overcook. Oats should be soft but not mushy. The microwave method is faster and easier to control.
  • Add milk at the end. Stirring in milk after cooking makes it creamier.
  • Toppings make it special. The base is simple. The toppings are where you make it yours.

More Topping Ideas

  • Apple Cinnamon: Diced apple, cinnamon, and a drizzle of honey.
  • Blueberry Almond: Fresh blueberries, sliced almonds, and a splash of almond milk.
  • Pumpkin Spice: Pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, and maple syrup.
  • Savory: Skip the sweet toppings. Add a fried egg, avocado, and everything bagel seasoning.

Your Oatmeal Questions, Answered

Q: Can I use quick oats instead of rolled oats?
A: Yes, but the texture will be softer. Reduce the cooking time slightly.

Q: Can I use steel-cut oats?
A: Yes, but they take much longer to cook—about 20–30 minutes on the stovetop.

Q: Can I make this ahead of time?
A: Yes. Make it in advance and store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Reheat with a splash of milk.

Q: Can I use all milk instead of water?
A: Yes. Use all milk for a creamier oatmeal, or a mix of milk and water.

Q: What’s the best milk for oatmeal?
A: Any milk works. Whole milk is creamiest, but almond, oat, and soy are all great.
