Nutella Banana Bread

The Best Nutella Banana Bread (So Easy!)

The Nutella Banana Bread That Disappears Before It Cools

You know that moment. You’ve got bananas on the counter going spotty and brown, too far gone for eating but perfect for baking. And you’ve got that jar of Nutella in the cupboard, the one you try to pretend isn’t there but somehow keeps calling your name. This bread is what happens when you stop pretending.

It’s banana bread—moist, tender, full of that sweet, earthy banana flavor you love. But then there’s Nutella swirled through it, rich and chocolatey, creating ribbons of hazelnut goodness in every slice. The two were always meant to find each other.

I’ve made this on lazy Sundays when the house needed to smell like something good. For breakfast when I wanted to feel like I was treating myself. For neighbors who needed a little something sweet. And every time, it’s gone before I have a chance to save a second slice for myself. The bananas keep it moist, the Nutella makes it feel indulgent, and the whole thing comes together in one bowl with no mixer needed.

Why This Bread Is a Keeper

  • One Bowl, No Mixer: Everything comes together in a single bowl with a whisk and a spatula. Simple, fast, easy cleanup.
  • Perfectly Moist: Ripe bananas and melted butter do the heavy lifting here. This bread stays tender for days.
  • Those Nutella Swirls: They’re not just on top—they’re swirled throughout, so every slice has pockets of chocolate-hazelnut goodness.
  • Breakfast or Dessert: It’s sweet enough for dessert, wholesome enough for breakfast. Works anytime.

Meet Your Ingredients

  • 3 ripe bananas, mashed – The browner, the better. Spotty bananas are sweeter and more flavorful.
  • ⅓ cup melted butter – The rich, tenderizing base.
  • ½ cup granulated sugar – Just enough sweetness to balance the bananas and Nutella.
  • 1 large egg, beaten – Adds structure and richness.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract – The warm, aromatic note.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda – The leavener.
  • Pinch of salt – Makes everything taste more like itself.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour – The structure.
  • ½ cup Nutella (plus extra for swirling) – The star. Chocolate-hazelnut ribbons throughout.
  • Optional: ½ cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans) – For a little crunch.

Let’s Make It

Step 1: Preheat and Prep
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line it with parchment paper. This is the hardest part, and it’s over already.

Step 2: Mix the Wet Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, mash the bananas with a fork. Stir in the melted butter until combined. Add the sugar, beaten egg, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.

Step 3: Add the Dry Ingredients
Sprinkle the baking soda and salt over the banana mixture. Stir to combine. Then gently fold in the flour until just combined. Don’t overmix—a few streaks of flour are okay. Overmixing makes tough bread.

Step 4: Swirl in the Nutella
Add the ½ cup of Nutella to the batter. Use a knife or spatula to gently swirl it through, leaving ribbons of chocolate throughout. Don’t overmix—you want those distinct swirls. If you’re using nuts, fold them in now.

Step 5: Pour and Swirl Again
Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan. If you reserved extra Nutella, dollop it on top and swirl with a knife.

Step 6: Bake
Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).

Step 7: Cool and Slice
Let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Or slice it warm and eat it with butter. No judgment.

A Few Tips

  • Use those spotty bananas. The browner they are, the sweeter and more flavorful your bread will be.
  • Melt the butter. It’s easier than creaming, and it keeps the bread tender.
  • Swirl, don’t mix. You want ribbons of Nutella throughout, not chocolate banana batter. A few gentle folds with a knife are all you need.
  • Let it cool. I know, it smells incredible. But slicing too soon can make it crumbly. Give it time.

Your Banana Bread Questions, Answered

Q: Can I use frozen bananas?
A: Yes. Thaw them first, then mash. They’ll be extra soft and sweet.

Q: Can I make this without Nutella?
A: Then it’s just banana bread. Which is also delicious. But the Nutella makes it special.

Q: Can I use whole wheat flour?
A: You can substitute half the flour with whole wheat. More than that and it may be dense.

Q: How do I know when it’s done?
A: A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Wet batter means it needs more time.

Q: Can I freeze this?
A: Yes. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and foil, then freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature.

Nutella Banana Bread is the ultimate quick bread! Ripe bananas swirled with rich Nutella create a moist, chocolate-hazelnut loaf perfect for breakfast, snacks, or dessert.

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe bananas, mashed

  • ⅓ cup (75g) unsalted butter, melted

  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg, beaten

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • Pinch of salt

  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup (150g) Nutella, plus extra for swirling

  • Optional: ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line with parchment.
  • In a bowl, mash bananas. Stir in melted butter. Add sugar, egg, and vanilla; mix until smooth.
  • Sprinkle baking soda and salt over mixture; stir. Gently fold in flour until just combined.
  • Add Nutella; swirl gently with a knife. Fold in nuts if using.
  • Pour batter into pan. Dollop extra Nutella on top if desired; swirl.
  • Bake 50–60 minutes until toothpick comes out clean or with moist crumbs.
  • Cool in pan 10 minutes, then transfer to wire rack. Slice and serve.

Notes

  • Ripe bananas: The browner, the better. Spotted bananas are sweeter and make moister bread.
  • Don’t overmix: Stir just until flour disappears. Overmixing = tough bread.
  • Make it dairy-free: Use plant-based butter and ensure your Nutella is dairy-free (original Nutella contains skim milk powder).
  • Storage: Keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to a week. Freezes beautifully for up to 3 months.
